Things to do in Nelson
Nelson has a lot to offer for everyone. There's a great variety of outdoor activities and art & culture that could keep you busy for months. We have listed some suggestions below and if you choose to go with an operator, they'll usually pick you up and drop you off at the hostel for free. We also have hiking gear for hire if you choose to go for an overnight hike in the Abel Tasman for example.
Our tours start daily at 9.30am. See us at the reception to make your free booking! All tours subject to change to suit weather conditions. Minimum 4 persons. You join at your own risk - high heels not recommended.
Climbing
Paynes Ford
Predominately a sport climbing area, the Paynes Ford rock climbing area offers routes that are generally vertical to slightly overhanging but with some steeper roofs. Climbers are offered a range of limestone features including pocks, cracks and flowstone which could be characterised as 'interesting slopers'.

Vertical Limits
Why not try climbing at our indoor climbing centre. From 5 yrs old and upwards we have a climb to suit all levels and abilities. If you're new to climbing our staff will run you through a short safety briefing and train you up with the basic skills required to climb safely.

Hiking / Tramping & Walks
Abel Tasman Coastal Track
One of NZ's 9 Great Walks - blessed with a mild climate, golden beaches and lush coastal native bush, the Abel Tasman Coast Track has it all. Walk the whole track in either direction, take a water taxi or kayak between different locations. The whole track is 60km and it takes 3-5 days to complete.

One of 9 NZ Great Walks. Travel through expansive tussock downs, lush forests and nīkau palms to the roaring seas of the West Coast. The whole track is 78.4km and it takes 4 - 6 days to complete.

The Centre of New Zealand on Botanical Hill is one of Nelson’s most popular walks. To reach the top will take 20-60 minutes, depending on your age, speed and fitness.

Stonehurst Farm
Stonehurst is a picturesque family farm, situated just a 20 minute drive from Nelson and 8 minutes from Richmond. They offer quality horse grazing, along with a full range of equestrian facilities which can be hired, including horse float, arenas. Clinics are held regularly at Stonehurst in a range of topics and disciplines. They can put you in touch with instructors who specialise in the area that best suits you, whether this is competitive riding, western or simply pleasure.
